Don’t Settle for “It’s Normal” With Dr. Mona Orady
There are episodes that leave us thinking, episodes that leave us learning, and then there are episodes like this one—where we just sit back and say, "Well, damn..."
Dr. Mona Orady is a minimally invasive gynecologic surgeon, founder of the Orady Women’s Clinic, mom of two, and one of the most passionate advocates for women's health we’ve ever had the pleasure of talking to. She has performed thousands of surgeries and is known for preserving fertility, calling out medical gaslighting, and giving patients back their autonomy.
We talked about fibroids, endometriosis, infertility, and the myth of the "normal" period. This episode is amazing, but be forewarned: you may leave it feeling as fired up as we did.
Here are just a few of the things that stuck with us:
A hysterectomy should never be the first recommendation unless it's absolutely necessary. According to Dr. Orady, there are often multiple, less invasive options for treating fibroids and heavy bleeding—but too many patients never hear about them.
Bleeding through your clothes, planning your life around your period, missing school or work—none of that is normal. If a doctor brushes it off or says it's just something you have to deal with, it's time to find another doctor.
Endometriosis doesn't automatically equal infertility. Early diagnosis and proper treatment can make a huge difference. You don't have to wait until after IVF fails to start looking for underlying causes.
You are the expert on your body. Dr. Orady repeated this throughout the episode. If something feels off, you have every right to keep asking questions, get second opinions, and push for care that respects your instincts.
We asked Dr. Orady, "How are you not filled with rage, given what you see every day?" In turn, Dr. Orady told us, "Because I'm filled with hope." We're so grateful for people like Dr. Orady who are doing the hard work to improve the system from the inside.
If you have a uterus, ever had a period, or know someone who does (and we're pretty sure you do), we highly recommend giving this one a listen.
